At some point, Evelyn would have to learn to properly communicate with her girlfriend. They danced around everything with jokes, innuendoes, and jestful accusations. She had not technically invited Victoria, but it was pretty clear she wasnât going to sleep alone tonight. Or sleep at all.
Just to make sure, she tackled another problem at the same time and said, âWeâll need to get some groceries if you plan on sticking around.â
Victoria snorted as she weaved her car between tight traffic. âAnd if I donât, youâll what? Order pizza again?â
âWhat do you mean, âagain?ââ
âI saw the boxes Ginny rushed by. Plural. But the counter was clean. Can you even cook?â
Evelyn waved away the accusation. âFuck you, too.â
âThatâs the plan,â Victoria mumbled as she wormed through hesitant traffic.
The engineâs roar had not muffled the promise, and Evelyn bit her lip at what the future held. No need to take things slow, I guess. To distract herself, she said, âIâll be sure to judge your home when I get to see it. I expect a tidy place with folded clothes, a neat row of work boots and sneakers, and little else beyond photos of your team. Maybe some spotless trophies.â
If Victoriaâs frown was any indication, the guesswork was spot on. She did not answer and returned to the subject of filling the fridge. âYou know, thereâs a few places here that deliver groceries. Just saying.â
âSaying what? That youâd rather not be seen with me?â
Victoria exhaled through her nose. âWhy are you always so annoyingly witty? You could talk yourself out of an interrogation. Which, I guess, you have.â
Evelyn beamed. Youâre damn right. She still grinned at her victory over Internal Affairs, and she was grateful Victoria didnât scold her for putting herself at risk. Granted, she had some help from a man who had battled them before. However, she agreed with her girlfriend; wittiness came easier than a serious conversation. It was a coping mechanism, any half-decent shrink would say, but joking about was her way of navigating life.
